DSM04 DSM-5 - PTSD in Preschool Children (inactive)
The DSM-5 includes a new developmental subtype of PTSD called “Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Preschool Children.”  This represents a significant step for the DSM taxonomy, and I am happy to be able to report that the general consensus is that the APA got something right.  The sense is that regarding the entire PTSD category, the DSM-5 closes a lot of loopholes in the diagnosis, without cutting out legitimate trauma sufferers, while being expanded to now cover the subtype of Pre-school children age six and younger.
Course Objective
This program provides clinicians with the opportunity to learn about:
• Identify the stressors involved in making a PTSD diagnosis in preschool children and how these stressors can be experienced.
• Understand why egocentrism is associated with trauma.
• Describe what secondary trauma is.
• Know what “dissociation” means and describe a technique that can be used when a child dissociates.

Nurses, Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Addiction Therapists 
Author Bio
Toni Heinemann, DMH. Toni Vaughn Heinemann, D.M.H., is the founder and Executive Director of A Home Within, the only national organization focused exclusively on the emotional well being of foster youth. She is Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Francisco in Psychiatry and has been in private practice in San Francisco, working with adults, children, and families for over 30 years. Dr. Heinemann consults with individuals and organizations. She is the author of several articles on psychotherapy with children and has made numerous presentations to lay and professional audiences about the mental health issues facing children and parents. She authored An Abused Child: Psychodynamic Understanding and Treatment and co-edited Building a Home Within: Meeting the Emotional Needs of Children and Youth in Foster Care.  Her latest book is entitled, Treating Trauma: Relationship based Psychotherapy.  She has been awarded a Leadership Fellowship with Zero to Three, a Draper Richards Social Entrepreneur Fellowship and a Social Entrepreneur Award from the Manhattan Institute and the 2008 Civic Ventures Purpose Prize, given to social entrepreneurs over the age of 60.
