Course Objective
This program provides clinicians with the opportunity to learn about:
• The impact of chronic illness, on the self of the person with the illness
“The central organizing principle.” Patient is no longer same self.
• How is the framework and the concepts of self-psychology helpful?

Author Bio
MARK SMALLER, Ph.D. Mark Smaller, Ph.D. is an adult and child Psychoanalyst and is a Faculty Member of Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and the Chicago Institute for Clinical Social Work, where he also serves on the Board of Trustees.  He is director of the Analytic Service to Adolescents Project, a public school based project that provides analytic treatment to severely troubled adolescents.  Dr. Smaller chairs the Committee on Social Issues of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Committee on Foundations, and serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Psychoanalytic Foundation.  He also chairs the Heinz Kohut Memorial Fund.  He has written and spoken extensively on self psychology and its application to social issues, most recently trauma, violence and terrorism, severe illness and child development.  His letters and op. ed. pieces on these subjects have been published in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Sun Times.
